Tommy
Description
Hi Dan
Just thought I’d drop you a line to let you know how Tommy’s getting on.
He’s an absolute dream! If I had to write a specification for my perfect dog it would be Tommy. He is very quick to learn (when I get the training right) and has just enough mischief thrown-in to make life more interesting without any major problems. I think he’s grasped about a dozen commands so far. I couldn’t believe how quickly he learnt not to (play) bite me. For days he was gradually increasing the pressure he applied to my arm: I was just trying to ignore it in the hope he’d get bored; I also tried redirecting his attention to a toy but he just came back to my arm later. Then I remembered that I was supposed to fake extreme pain, so I did – and he hasn’t done it since! Just like that!
Tommy’s recall is improving, so he gets long sessions off the lead in Roundwood park every day, as well as two or three walks around the block, interspersed with numerous games around the house (his favourites are playing chase and tug-of-war). He’s also getting to know a few of the local dogs. He LOVES playing fetch with a tennis ball: he could just carry on for hours. At home he will often fetch one of his (many) toys to play tug-of-war or just chew quietly on my lap while watching TV. At about 9pm he just collapses on the sofa next to me with his head on my lap and goes to sleep.
He doesn’t bother us while we’re eating: after about a minute of being ignored he just lies down under the table until we’ve finished. While I’m working at my desk he just lies behind me on my bed, which means he gets lots of fuss and quick games, and I get lots of welcome breaks.
He’s making steady progress learning where he can and can’t wee, and now only has mishaps when he’s very excited. He’s very comfortable travelling in a car for short journeys: soon we’ll try longer ones.
In short, we couldn’t be happier with Tommy. Judging by his expression and the constant tail-wagging I think he’s happy too. Thank you and everyone at the Mayhew for looking after him.
Kind Regards
André
